Hi there, it’s Liza.

These Updates are an archive of emails sent out during dance events on the West Coast Swing competition circuit.

In 2006 I started sending emails from my phone to a small group of dancer friends at home in DC.

Soon discovered my messages were being forwarded all over the place. We’d go to a competition in Texas, people would ask to be added to my list. I’d say “It’s really not a “list” – and not that interesting – rough notes pounded out with thumbs – bad grammar bad writing.”

They’d say “Add me.”

The “list” got too big for my phone, so I moved to gmail.

Then it got too big for gmail so I moved to a newsletter service.

Now thousands read these things. People in Singapore, India, Brazil, Hungary, even people in Wichita are reading. It’s a little scary.

I wasn’t saving the updates. Who would want to read old updates? I deleted all the first years, those first ones sent out with my phone.

And now dancers who weren’t born yet in 2006 want to read updates “from the olden days.”

I don’t have them! And I’d be embarrassed to see how awful they probably were.

So that’s what this is. A personal history of our misadventures at comps attended by my husband Genieboy and myself from 2006 to the present.

Updates for specific events are listed over on the right.

Pictures from each event are under the “Event Photography” section here on this website, and also in my Facebook albums. Each comp has it’s own album, named for the event and year.

Feel free to leave your comments here! Corrections (I make a lot of mistakes,) your own impressions of an event, personal highlights, gripes, thoughts about the west coast swing community, your life as a wcs dancer, where to buy pizza at 4am, new events you want to publicize, whatever.

p.s. Oh, I also take pictures. Forgot to mention that. I LOVE shooting weddings, and am hire-able, along with my second shooter whom you may know and love. I also love portraiture, family shoots, any zany photo shoot ideas — anything with people and faces. I love faces. :-)
